M.I.A. (US - Punk) Forged in the desert of Las Vegas, Nevada in 1980, M.I.A. migrated the next year to Southern California, becoming part of the early Orange County punk scene, playing regular shows at the infamous Cuckoo’s Nest. In 1981 the band recorded nine songs. One song from the session appeared on the classic Maximum Rocknroll fanzine compilation Not So Quiet on the Western Front (Alternative Tentacles, 1982), another on the seminal American Youth Report compilation (Bomp, 1982) the rest landed on the Last Rites for Genocide and MIA split LP (Smoke Seven, 1982). After a show supporting the Dead Kennedys in 1983, the band made a deal with Jello Biafra to release their next LP, Murder in a Foreign Place on Alternative Tentacles in 1984. With two interim national tours, Notes From the Underground (National Trust) was the 1985 follow-up, recorded with legendary producer Thom Wilson (T.S.O.L., D.I., Dead Kennedys, D.O.A., etc.). Their final album, After the Fact (Flipside) was released in 1987, with another national tour with the Descendents. Singer Mike Conley passed away in 2008 following a tragic accident. Original members Nick Adams (guitar), Paul Schwartz (bass) and Larz Pearson (drums) perform as a three piece with Adams taking over vocal duties. In 2023, French label Modern City re-issued Notes From the Underground and After the Fact as a special 2 LP set. To celebrate the record’s 40th anniversary, Modern City and Alternative Tentacles are reissueing Murder In a Foreign Place this summer, adding 8 previously unreleased tracks.

BLEAKNESS (FR - Dark Punk) Formed in Nantes in 2016, Bleakness quickly played all the venues in the city before releasing a first EP and leaving for a first European tour to deliver dark and melancholic punk rock. A year later, the band moved and settled between Paris and Lyon and recorded a first album, 'Functionally Extinct', which was released just in time for a French tour with their Greek brothers Chain Cult at the end of 2019, before the world stopped for two years. Unable to remain inactive and heartened by many feedbacks following their new record, the trio used the time freed up by two European tours canceled in 2020 and began writing a new album. Following the same path as previous recordings, Bleakness explores with this new album its influences from the 80s, such as English post-punk and Californian death rock, and mixes them with its hardcore punk roots. The result is dark and energetic, engaged and melancholic. Bleakness takes the atmosphere of the early days of gothic and injects it with a strong dose of hardcore punk rage. Like the music, the lyrics are a dark observation of the times we live in. 'Life At A Standstill' is a collection of life stories from an oppressed and angry generation. Since the release of their acclaimed second album, Bleakness is determined to make up for the lost time and deliver its dark but never resigned message in the form of numerous energetic live shows.
