A BURIAL AT SEA (IRL)

A cascade of brass-fuelled euphoria arcs across the velvet night as infinite waves of guitar delay lap at a shore both familiar and foreign; explorative, optimistic and triumphant…

Inimitable post-rock outsiders A Burial At Sea return with ‘Close To Home’, a soaring sonic love letter to the places and people that shaped them, released on February 23rd, 2024 via Berlin’s Pelagic Records.

The collective’s first new music since the eponymous debut full-length in 2020, ‘Close To Home’ is a breathtaking evolution of their unique, brass-led blend of shoegaze, math-metal and blissed out afro-jazz that draws inspiration, influence and insight from the rich Gaelic cultural heritage of their Irish homeland.

Now based across the Irish Sea in Liverpool, principal songwriters Patrick Blaney and Dara Tohill composed the bones of ‘Close To Home’ over lockdown in an intense period of introspection, enveloping years of creative ideas brought to life in the here and now. Haunting, bittersweet melodies plucked from childhood, folksong memories ebb and flow like a stream of consciousness as the eclectic collective dial down the overdrive and let the ephemeral, organic spaces where distortion meets horn section sing out the loudest…Whilst the band’s penchant for blistering post-hardcore velocity is a welcome presence on ‘Close To Home’, ‘Masterfred’ shows that A Burial At Sea aren’t afraid to turn the volume down as well; giving way to a deeper, organic dynamic that picks up every intimate detail, rattle and hum. Everything comes home though on album closer ‘DALL’, a six-minute siren song of ethereal, jazz-soaked horn arpeggios that ride an ever-rising tide of anthemic guitar work and sparkling, syncopated grooves. Short for ‘Cushendall’, the village in which fellow founder Patrick Blaney was born and raised, ‘DALL’ is the aural embodiment of the band looking to their past as much as they drive forwards to parts unknown, alive with hope and potential.

Sui palchi collezionano una buona quantità di: singalong, pogo, ditoni puntati al cielo e amicizia.

Dal 2013 fanno uscire tre dischi.

Nel 2019 si salutano e fanno che basta per un po’.

Nel 2023 si ritrovano e iniziano a scrivere canzoni nuove.

Nel 2024 esce "Restare Intatti".

«Gli Yawning Man erano la desert band più assurda di tutti i tempi. Ti bastava essere lassù, nel deserto, con tutti gli altri a divertirti. Ed apparivano loro, sul loro furgone, tiravano fuori la loro roba e la montavano proprio nell'ora in cui il sole calava, attivavano i generatori, a volte potevano stare semplicemente lì a bere birra. Altre volte era uno spettacolo; altre volte ancora si creava un ambiente intimo. Era tutto molto casuale e rilassato e mentre loro suonavano tutti potevano semplicemente bighellonare in giro. Erano una specie di house band. Non erano attivisti come i Black Flag. Era tutto molto alterato, confuso, era tutto molto mistico. La gente stava lì a sballarsi, e loro continuavano a suonare per ore. Oh, sono la più grande band che abbia mai visto.- Brant Bjork (2002)»

Il gruppo si forma dopo lo scioglimento degli Across the River, nel 1986, prendendo il nome da un personaggio presente in un musical di Tom Thumb del 1958. Gli Yawning Man cominciano ad esibirsi durante diversi generator party, feste organizzate in mezzo al deserto dove generatori diesel venivano utilizzati per alimentare gli amplificatori e permettere alle band di suonare. Artisti della scena stoner rock come John Garcia, Josh Homme e Brant Bjork assistono a questi concerti e ne rimangono fortemente influenzati.

Gli Yawning Man inizialmente non pubblicano registrazioni, ma incidono due demo inedite. Nell'ultimo album dei Kyuss, ...And The Circus Leaves Town, uscito nel 1995, è possibile ascoltare una cover degli Yawning Man: Catamaran.

REZN (US)

Chicago-based cosmic and cataclysmic quartet REZN have mined the stark monochromatic depths of underground metal and fused them with the kaleidoscopic delights of psychedelia, prog rock, and shoegaze. From their inception, the band have been fiercely independent with a fully realized aesthetic and a fervent cult following. As knowledgeable gear heads, experienced sound engineers, and seasoned DIY veterans, REZN have been able to create a body of work devoid of any sonic compromises in their speaker-rattling dirges and heady lysergic forays. Their four self-released albums—Let It Burn (2017), Calm Black Water (2018), Chaotic Divine (2020), and Solace (2023)—have all gone through multiple vinyl pressings without any distribution or retail presence, and the international underground heavy psych world has routinely selected the band for distinguished festival slots across North America and Europe.



BLACK TUSK (US)

Black Tusk was born from sweat. There was blood, and maybe a few tears, too, but more than anything, it was sweat that marked the earliest years of Savannah, Georgia’s Black Tusk. Formed in 2005 by three lifelong friends—bassist Jonathan Athon, guitarist Andrew Fidler, and drummer James May—the band welded together what they called “swamp metal.”



SOILENT GREEN (US)

Soilent Green, formed in 1988 in New Orleans, USA, are well known as one of the world’s premiere Grindcore/Sludge Metal bands. The band’s 1990s and early-2000s albums are regarded as trendsetting for the Grindcore genre, with a Rolling Stone article listing Soilent Green as one of the “ten most important hard and heavy bands” of the late 1990s.

ZEKE established a nasty disposition while cutting teeth on their own brash hardcore punk. ZEKE formed in 1993 with an original lineup of Blind Marky Felchtone, Donny Paycheck, Mark Pierce, and Dizzy Lee Roth. The band’s first release was 1993’s ‘West Seattle Acid Party’ single on Wrecking Ball Records, followed by the ‘Holley 750’ single on IFA Records. ZEKE then set out to bring their energetic recordings to the stage and established a more than formidable reputation as “the live band to beat” via concentrated regional touring.


The self titled single ‘Zeke’ was then released on Scooch Pooch Records and was followed by the 1995 release ‘Super Sound Racing.’ ZEKE then hit the road again, unveiling a devastatingly high-octane live assault. The band was heralded as “Rock and Roll outlaws,” playing every conceivable venue that would have them. The release of the next full-length, ‘Flat Tracker’ a year later ensured ZEKE had enough audio ammo to stay on the road for months on end. And tour they would…


In 1997 Man’s Ruin Records issued the live album ‘PIG’ to a rousing response. ZEKE then signed to Epitaph Records in 1998, releasing, ‘Kicked In The Teeth.’ ‘Kicked In The Teeth’ was mixed and engineered by Jack Endino and the album’s increased distribution and availability found the band legions of white-knuckled new followers.


ZEKE recorded the follow up to ‘Kicked in the Teeth’ – ‘Dirty Sanchez’ – with Kurt Bloch of THE FASTBACKS.


‘Dirty Sanchez’ was released in early 2000. ZEKE’s second Epitaph release, ‘Dirty Sanchez’ rocked like a motherfucker. From the beginning quote of “Hey, he’s acting weird, it must be drugs!” to the last roar of the FLEETWOOD MAC’s “Rhiannon,” ‘Dirty Sanchez’ bludgeoned with tireless energy. Following ‘Dirty Sanchez’s’ release, bassist Mark Pierce left the band and was replaced by Jeff “The Kid” Matz.


Throughout the time that ZEKE called Epitaph home, they toured relentlessly. The band paired up with anyone and everyone who would have them, hitting the road with the likes of JERRY CANTRELL (ALICE IN CHAINS), ALL, THE VOODOO GLOW SKULLS, DOA, THE SUPERSUCKERS and even a few dates with PEARL JAM. The band toured the U.S., Europe, Japan and Australia, spreading their rock while breaking all the rules. ZEKE played everything from stadiums with 50,000 people, to bars with 10 people, but the spirit remained the same; rock like this might be the last show ever.


The band’s fifth full-length, ‘Death Alley’ was released in 2001. Even after a solid stretch of similarly themed and arranged albums, ZEKE’s ‘Death Alley’ began with the premise that “fast is just not fast enough.” ‘Death Alley’ continued the band’s full-throttle approach, utilizing ZEKE’s essential formula – a manic, methamphetamine lab distillation of early American hardcore and classic rock – to full effect.


When you’re a punk band that is eternally touring, strange things are bound to happen that will have as much of an influence on the band as the music that got them started. KISS, BLACK FLAG, THE RAMONES and BLACK SABBATH all get a run for the money when it comes to ZEKE antics. When asked about some specifics, vocalist / guitarist Marky Felchtone rattled off a brief list: “Drum sticks in eyes, broken bones, incidents involving cake, drugs


and under-aged females, Black Metal homicides, etc…you name it” Felchtone went on to note that the reason he and ZEKE love touring so much is that it’s “it’s the best reason to avoid real responsibility.”


After leaving Epitaph and releasing 2003’s ‘Live and Uncensored,’ ZEKE began writing new material and set out looking for a suitable label that they could not only feel at home with, but one that could handle their “balls to the wall” rock and roll and enjoy the band as fans first. A contract with Relapse was inked in October, 2003 and saw the band join an artist stable (MASTODON, HIGH ON FIRE, ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY, BONGZILLA, etc) that are at once musically mated and touring compatible. ZEKE found their new home.


ZEKE set the cruise control to “white hot” on their Relapse debut, ”Til the Livin’ End.’ A relentless ride of rock and roll abandon, ZEKE’s ”Til the Livin’ End’ mixes punk nihilism with a hard hitting metal extravagance. ”Til the Livin’ End’ burns from start to finish, as super-charged guitars, electrifying leads and a raucous punk attitude race fullthrottle down a highway to Hell.


Thank the gods of rock and roll, you’ve just met your new favorite band!

MEPHISTOFELES (ARGENTINA)

I Mephistofeles sono un trio argentino originario di Entre Ríos.

Dal 2013 fedelissimi ai fumi allucinogeni degli Electric Wizard e al dogma dei padri supremi Black Sabbath, si inseriscono nel genere stoner doom.

Inizialmente pubblicano una serie di demo e nel 2016 esce il loro primo vero e proprio full album Whore attraverso le Black Noise, Pirámide Records et Golden Dawn Recordings.

Southcave Records, Creep Purple Promotion e Black Farm Records l'anno successivo pubblicano già una seconda edizione del disco. Il 2017 è in effetti un anno cruciale per i Mephistofeles, che compaiono nella compilation Devotional Doom e nello stesso periodo fanno uscire l'ep Mayhem Sessions, uno split coi Sahara e, non paghi, il loro secondo album (((I'm Heroin))).
