Armed with an arsenal of killer Steel/Dangerfield songs The Boys became the first UK punk band to sign an album deal in January 1977. Highly regarded by the music press and their contemporaries, their well-crafted songs, together with Steel and Dangerfield’s love of harmonies, led to them being described as ‘The Beatles of Punk’ but they could (and should) just as deservedly have been compared to the Ramones – fast, alternately brattish and tongue-in-cheek, and gloriously anthemic. As Last FM puts it: “The Boys provided the template for superior Pop Punk before even the Buzzcocks had got out of first gear”. The Boys were born in September 1975 when singer/guitarist Matt Dangerfield left Mick Jones and Tony James’s fledgling punk band London SS to form a new band with ex-Hollywood Brats songwriter/keyboard player Casino Steel. Dangerfield’s art college pal, guitarist Honest John Plain, was quickly recruited. The following year they held auditions for the bass and drum roles with Kid Reid and Jack Black completing the line-up. Matt Dangerfield had converted the tiny disused coal cellar of his rented basement flat in Maida Vale into a home recording studio/rehearsal room and as a consequence, 47A Warrington Crescent became extremely important in the development of the UK punk scene in the mid-seventies. Mick Jones, Glen Matlock, Tony James, Rat Scabies, Brian James, Gene October, Sid Vicious and Billy Idol were regular visitors. Amongst others, The Sex Pistols, The Damned, London SS, Clash, Chelsea, Generation X and of course, The Boys, made their first recordings there. In this hotbed of creativity Steel and Dangerfield quickly forged a prolific songwriting partnership. The Boys made their live debut at London’s Hope and Anchor in October 1976. Mick Jones, Billy Idol, Joe Strummer, Tony James and Gene October were in attendance for The Boys first performance. A mere handful of gigs later, they became the first UK punk band to sign an album deal when NEMS Records snapped them up in January 1977. Having released two albums and three singles with NEMS, they moved to Safari Records in 1979 where two further albums and five more singles followed. Over the years countless bands have covered The Boys’ back catalogue – from Argentina to Germany and Japan to the USA – and even more artists have cited The Boys as a major influence. MARC VALENTINE (UK) As frontman of cult British power-pop outfit Last Great Dreamers, Marc Valentine has brought sparkle to venues and turntables alike with his distinctive vocals, wry charm and songbook of secret classics. Now, with his favourite guitar in tow, he's heading out on a solo adventure, loading his flight case with a fresh set of tunes, and polishing the trademark twinkle in his eye. Debut album Future Obscure sees Valentine building on his past while expanding his sonic palette, to craft a collection of should-be hits – 7-inch-shaped songs that move both body and mind. Valerio Marcellino e Marco Andrea Lippa iniziano il progetto nel 2015 come ambient duo, creando paesaggi sonori tramite l’uso di chitarre, synth ed effetti vocali. Successivamente la line up si completa con l’aggiunta di una sezione ritmica, facendo convergere il sound verso uno stile più orientato al post rock. Nel 2018 la band pubblica il disco d’esordio dal titolo “Oltremare”, che viene accolto positivamente dalla scena Post Rock internazionale, finendo anche nella Top March-April 2018 releases a cura del canale WherePostRockDwells. Oltremare è caratterizzato per lo più da sonorità calme, sognanti, figlie del sound di origine della band. Initially from Long Beach, CA, the band relocated across the United States residing in Buffalo, Los Angeles, and the high-desert of Eastern Oregon. Originally formed by vocalist and bassist, Armand Lance, and violinist, SJ, their line-up has since solidified with the addition of their guitarist, Sean McCormick, and Drummer, Landon Cisneros providing a striking sound described by The Obelisk as lush and ranging, a “languid grunge blasted into outer space in the desert night”. A year later, the new album: "Demonsmoke" was materialized. La proposta musicale è sempre stata caratterizzata da sonorità estreme e da composizioni molto brevi eseguite con chitarra elettrica, archi e batteria elettronica, ma negli anni ha subito una forte evoluzione fino ad arrivare all’Ep Cortina in cui le chitarre sono state sostituite dal violino. Il nuovo album intitolato Bancarotta Morale è un ulteriore passo avanti nella ricerca di sonorità e non usuali ed è la conseguenza naturale di quanto pubblicato fino ad oggi. Le tematiche affrontate sono per lo più riferite ai drammi della vita, al forte contrasto tra l’essere umano e il mondo che lo circonda, ma soprattutto al difficile rapporto tra gli esseri umani stessi. Nel 2015 il progetto è diventato un duo con l’ingresso in formazione di Alessandro Vagnoni come batterista dal vivo e polistrumentista in studio. BOLOGNA VIOLENTA è stato materia d’esame nel corso di Arte digitale all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia e presso la stessa sede è stato anche presentato il progetto The Sound of…, in cui i pezzi di quaranta discografie diverse vengono fatti suonare simultaneamente. Nel 2019 è uscito il documentario Uno Bianca – Mirare allo Stato in cui la colonna sonora è composta da brani tratti dai dischi pubblicati tra il 2010 e il 2016. Nel suo percorso musicale nell'hip hop salta subito all'occhio il suo approccio positivo che ha nei confronti della vita, che si riflette anche nella sua musica, un funk melodico e delicato, fatto di strumentali mai pesanti e non troppo cariche di elementi. Il suo rap mischia dialetto calabrese e l'esoticità della sua origine in una miscela che ai più piace. Lugi è un artista che spicca per il suo equilibrio nei lavori in cui è stato impegnato, tra i suoi lavori ci sono le strumentali del disco Italy's Most Wanted dei Flaminio Maphia. Nel 2000, pubblicato dalla Jackpot Records di Neffa, è uscito il suo primo album solista dal titolo Ca'Pu. Nell'LP spiccano brani come Adelante, Funky Per Funky ed il remix di Non C'è Limite Allo Show, il cui brano originale era stato inserito all'interno dell'LP Novecinquanta del DJ Fritz Da Cat. Di origine etiope, il "lugico" Lugi cresce a Cosenza nel quartiere popolare di via Popilia. Per come racconta nei suoi testi Luigi cresce ascoltando e ballando il funky, che ancora oggi è il suo genere musicale preferito, finché negli anni '80 non viene folgorato dai primi echi rap provenienti dall'oltreoceano. Cosenza è una città culturalmente in crescita, per cui aereosol art e breaking non faticano a diffondersi. Cominciano a comparire i primi graffiti sui muri cittadini mentre Dj Louis, così si faceva chiamare all'epoca, si appassiona alla danza non disdegnando però il rap. È il periodo in cui in Italia cominciano a diffondersi le posse e proprio intorno ad un centro sociale, il Gramna, nasce la prima crew rap cittadina: la South Posse. Il gruppo in cui Lugi trova collocazione si distingue dalle altre omologhe, sparse sul territorio nazionale, per via dei testi poco scontati e del suo stile molto travolgente. Searching for new musical horizons 'A' (drums) and 'Dead K' (guitar, vocals) went different ways for a while but came together again to build up a new band. 'Benjian' (bass) completed the first classic trio line-up which then was into jam sessions musically oriented at playing progressive rock with the emphasis on psychedelic and space. The band released the 7'' production 'The Shape Of Rock To Come' (2001) and the full album 'Birth Of The Neo Trip' (2002) on their own label Ancient Records representing a special blend of space and jazz rock. This received good reviews from Japanese and American magazines. 2003 saw bassist 'Benjian' replaced by 'T'. The same year they went to USA to produce a new album but the work could not be completed. So they kept recording for themselves after going back to Tokyo. Finally it was finished at the end of June containing five well-elaborated songs. 'He's Crying Look' got to be the first album for Beta-lactam Ring Records - released in 2004 on compact disc as well as on double vinyl. The band continued touring USA/Canada for several times and produced the next full album 'City Calls Revolution' - released end of May 2005. As for the next year two new EPs saw the light of day before they lost bass player 'T' in 2007. GMFTTO went to sleep then for an indefinite period only interrupted by the official announcement that new band mate 'Margarette H' was found in the summer of 2008. GREEN MILK FROM THE PLANET ORANGE offers excellent space and heavy psychedelic rock and can be rated on the same level as other Japanese acts like 'Acid Mothers Temple' and 'Flower Travelin' Band'. LOVE GANG (US) Love Gang is a rock ’n roll band based out of Denver, Colorado. Formed in 2015, Love Gang is a throwback to the golden days of rock ’n roll when the amps were loud, the hair was long and the drugs were cheap. The band was discovered in late December 2009 by Digby Pearson, the owner of record label Earache, in a mix tape posted on the Invisible Oranges blog. After hearing the song "Born Stupid" on the compilation, Pearson searched out and downloaded Wormrot's full-length debut, Abuse, from file-sharing site MediaFire. Pearson was impressed with the album's quality and the band's "ambition, hard work ethic, and willingness to put Singapore and Asian grindcore in the global map." GRUMO (IT) GRUMO (“Clot”, “Gore”) is a grindcore band formed in 2004 in Modena (Italy), when Riki (vocals) and Nico (drums) got together. At the beginning, the sound was inspired by bands like Anal Cunt and early Cripple Bastards, with tracks often under 40 sec. The purpose was to play pure noisecore. During the years, the band has played many gigs and festivals (Porco Dio Fest, September to Dismember 3th, Roma A-Bestial Fest), supporting both Italian (Cripple Bastards, Dysmorfic, Repulsione, Jesus Ain’t in Poland…) and international bands (Holocausto Canibal, D-Compose, Sakatat, Social Chaos, Yack, Captain Cleanoff, Sete Star Sept). Although the first 8 years were characterized by few line-up changes, 2012 marked a significant turning point: the first record, Voglio Vederti Sprofondare (“I Want to See You Sink”), was released through independent labels and a new guitarist (Simmi) and a new bass player (Marco) joined the band. Grumo finally find a more personal sound and plays grindcore combined with elements of death metal. Furthermore, a split with Ebola was released on 7”. Searching for new musical horizons 'A' (drums) and 'Dead K' (guitar, vocals) went different ways for a while but came together again to build up a new band. 'Benjian' (bass) completed the first classic trio line-up which then was into jam sessions musically oriented at playing progressive rock with the emphasis on psychedelic and space. The band released the 7'' production 'The Shape Of Rock To Come' (2001) and the full album 'Birth Of The Neo Trip' (2002) on their own label Ancient Records representing a special blend of space and jazz rock. This received good reviews from Japanese and American magazines. 2003 saw bassist 'Benjian' replaced by 'T'. The same year they went to USA to produce a new album but the work could not be completed. So they kept recording for themselves after going back to Tokyo. Finally it was finished at the end of June containing five well-elaborated songs. 'He's Crying Look' got to be the first album for Beta-lactam Ring Records - released in 2004 on compact disc as well as on double vinyl. The band continued touring USA/Canada for several times and produced the next full album 'City Calls Revolution' - released end of May 2005. As for the next year two new EPs saw the light of day before they lost bass player 'T' in 2007. GMFTTO went to sleep then for an indefinite period only interrupted by the official announcement that new band mate 'Margarette H' was found in the summer of 2008. GREEN MILK FROM THE PLANET ORANGE offers excellent space and heavy psychedelic rock and can be rated on the same level as other Japanese acts like 'Acid Mothers Temple' and 'Flower Travelin' Band'. LOVE GANG (US) Love Gang is a rock ’n roll band based out of Denver, Colorado. Formed in 2015, Love Gang is a throwback to the golden days of rock ’n roll when the amps were loud, the hair was long and the drugs were cheap. Influenced by the obscure and underground rock of the 70s, they manage to keep their sound classic and true while also creating original, compelling songs that don’t grow tired or sound as if you’ve heard it all before. UZEDA (IT) Uzeda is an Italian quartet (Giovanna Cacciola on vocals, Raffaele Gulisano on bass, Davide Oliveri on drums, Agostino Tilotta on guitar) that represents one of the most original takes on noise-rock of the 1990s. Out of Colours (A.V. Arts, 1991), Waters (A.V. Arts, 1993) and the four-song EP 4 (Touch and Go, 1995) slowly cemented a style that is both brutal and lyrical, fierce and mercyful, physical and psychological, but never derivative of the American masters of noise-rock. After 13 years from the last releases, the band with the beloved friend Steve Albini recorded Quocumque Jeceris Stabit released through Overdrive in EU and Temporary Residence in USA. JOHN DUNCAN (US) & IVAN FU PJEVCEVIC (SRB/IT) John Duncan's work often addresses issues of power, authority, and control, often involving elements of personal risk and danger. His early works included confrontational performances, public interventions and a number of audio works, many of which incorporated found sounds, shortwave radio signals and field recordings. Over the years, his work has become increasingly focused on spirituality, ritual, and the subconscious mind. Ivan FU Pjevcevic is a musician, composer graphic artist and audio engineer known for his contributions to experimental and electroacoustic music, often collaborating with avant-garde artists such as John Duncan, playing a significant role in the albums 3NDLSS, Soft Eyes and Lucid Calm, performing on fretless bass, synths and Ondes Martenot. Although the band’s members met while attending all-ages shows in and around Washington, D.C.’s punk/indie scene, the trio draws more of its sound from such classic rock legends as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. The trio formed in the fall of 1998 with singer/guitarist Simon, bassist Steve Kille, and drummer Mark Laughlin. The three members set out to fuse their love of early-’70s hard rock and ’60s psychedelia into their distinct sound. They released their eight song debut album in 1999. Within a relatively short period, the D.C. trio received offers to tour with everyone from local D.C. acts like The Make-Up and Fugazi to psychedelic rockers Brian Jonestown Massacre. The much acclaimed debut was quickly followed by 2001’s “Howls from the Hills”, recorded at friend Stephen McCarty’s (who would later join Dead Meadow) grandparent’s farm house in rural Indiana and also released on Tolotta Records. The band signed with Matador Records in early 2003 and released “Shivering King and Others”. Along with the heavy feel and blues-influenced songs, as found on the previous two records, the band incorporated a more layered and dense sound, and continued in their psychedelic style. With the addition of long time friend Cory Shane as second guitarist, the band released the much acclaimed “Feathers” LP in 2005 on Matador Records. This record incorporated the heavy sound of Dead Meadow with a somewhat more dreamlike feel and included a great deal of two guitar interplay between Cory and Jason. 2007 saw the band reverting back to a three piece and relocating from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles, CA. “Old Growth”, the fifth studio album was released in 2008 on Matador Records. In 2010 Dead Meadow released a feature length live film and soundtrack, “Three Kings”, that spotlighted their live show and included psychedelic dream sequences that follow a loose storyline. Stephen McCarty left the band and original drummer Mark Laughlin returned. The group spent a long, patient time self-producing and recording 2013’s epic double-album-length release “Warble Womb”, also released on Xemu records. With the release of the LP “The Nothing they Need” in 2018, Steve and Jason celebrate twenty years of Dead Meadow with eight songs that feature everyone that has been musically involved with the band over the years. The Lockdown of 2020 gave the band some much needed rest from touring though two live records were released. Throughout 2023 Dead Meadow performed sporadically and began work on a new full length LP for Heavy Psych Sounds Records. The band completed tracking the record in January of 2024 shortly after finding out the terrible news that bass player Steve Kille had been diagnosed with Cancer. Though he began Chemo within a month or so the cancer had progressed too far and was too aggressive to be stopped. Steve Kille passed away on April 14th, 2024 leaving an incredible legacy of utterly unique bass playing, a singular artistic vision, and boundless creativity. Band members, friends, and fans alike were devastated but the outpouring of love for Steve as a musician, friend, and amazing human being was a beautiful thing to see. South Carolina-born Andino has played with LSD And The Search For God and most recently L.A. Witch as a touring guitarist.
